Better Work Ethiopia

Better Work Ethiopia is part of the Advancing Decent Work and Inclusive Industrialization In Ethiopia/ programme known as SIRAYE.

Established in 2019, SIRAYE brings together not only the vast experience of the ILO in different countries, but also a new way of delivering support in a holistic and coordinated manner. Unique in the ILO, SIRAYE works at the national, regional and factory levels involving different ILO departments and key global programmes, including Better Work.



Ethiopia: Our services

Better Work Ethiopia offers our full suite of services under our global Factory Engagement Model to registered factories. This includes a series of Learning and Assessment services, as detailed below.


The learning part of our process takes place through advisory factory visits, training and industry seminars. Learning will focus on topics such workplace cooperation, human resources, occupational safety and health, productivity, financial literacy, communication, negotiation, supervisory skills etc. Depending on the focus of the learnings, they will either be implemented by the Better Work team or other ILO teams based on their specific area of expertise.

Our advisory work

begins with a specially-tailored programme of coaching from our experienced staff. Here we engage factory managers one-on-one in identifying compliance and other issues and establish the means of improvement, working with them every step of the way.

Industry Seminars

are an integral part of the advisory process as they provide an important opportunity for factories to learn from their peers. Seminars are participatory, learner-centered workshops that aim to tackle collectively areas of needed improvement identified across factories.

Basic Rights and Responsibilities Training in light of National Labour Law

It is a half day training which is designed to give workers a strong understanding of Ethiopian Labour Law and how to apply it to in their day to day personal and work life.

Financial Literacy Training

This training helps workers how to manage money and keeping financial records, making a budget and how to stay within budget.

Intercultural communication

This is a new Better Work training topic developed to address intercultural issues in garment and textile factories so that better communication and mutual cultural understanding can be reached.

Introduction to supply chain and right and responsibilities of workers

It is a 2 hour training for factory operators/supervisors

Labour Law Training

Factories that understand and comply with the national labour laws and international labour standards tend to have good reputations, repeat orders and better relationships with buyers. This course is designed to give participants a strong understanding of Ethiopian Labour Law and how to apply it to day to day activities.

Occupational safety and health (OSH)

Good Occupational Health & Safety (OSH) is good for business. This course builds awareness of OSH as an integral part of factory management. Focusing on a preventative approach to OSH including risk mapping, it guides participants to spot hazards, meet national and international standards and the understand the role of the OSH committee.

Personal Hygiene

The Personal Hygiene training introduces participants to how germs spread and how to prevent their transmission. The module also talks about the importance of hand washing, including how to properly wash hands to prevent the spread of germs and when hand washing is necessary. Additional tips are provided for healthy dental hygiene and hygiene in the toilet and kitchen. Specific tips will be provided for female workers on proper menstrual hygiene as well as how to better manage their monthly symptoms. Lastly, some tips will address common myths and misconceptions that may negatively affect women’s health or promote unhygienic behaviours.

Sexual Harassment Prevention (SHP) training

This specially designed course aims to help participants to recognise there are different forms of sexual harassment in the workplace, understand why sexual harassment is prevalent in garment factories, its impacts on the working environment and especially the factory’s productivity. Taking the training also helps participants to develop strategies to address and prevent sexual harassment, steps to deal with cases of sexual harassment at factories.

Soft Skills for operators (Work place communication, Workplace harassment and working time)

This is a half day soft skills training designed for textile and garment factory operators/workers to equip them with required skills and to create awareness about the basic work place communication skills, Workplace harassment and abuse and working time)

Soft Skills Training for Operators

The main objective of soft skills training is to equip factory workers with the social and interpersonal skills that enable them to cope with the demands of everyday life so that help them build self-confidence, encourage critical thinking, foster independence and help them to communicate and build inter personal relationship. What are the training Objectives? After successfully completing life skills training, participants will be able to: Develop emotional awareness & emotional management Develop effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills Become self-confident individuals by mastering inter-personal skills, team management skills, and leadership skills. Identify their social skills in terms of their ability to making friends Developing healthy eating habit

Supervisory Skills Training (SST)

This training will give current and aspiring supervisors the tools they need to transform the workplace through improved supervision of and communication with workers. At the end of the course, participants will be more knowledgeable and adept in performing their supervision duties in areas such as motivating the workforce, maintaining discipline, delegating tasks and providing constructive feedback.

Time Management Training

This training helps workers understand the importance of managing their time and the importance of prioritizing tasks and responsibilities.

TOT on Sexual Harassmet and Prevention

The main objective is to equip potential trainers form BW registered factories with required training delivery and facilitation skills so that help them cascade down the Sexual Harassment and Prevention training at the operators level

Women Leadership Development Training

The main aim of the women empowerment leadership training program is to provide textile and garment factory women workers with required skills and knowledge to undertake more senior roles/supervisory positions. Specifically, the women empowerment leadership intervention aims to:

  • Enhance the capacity of potential women supervisors/ workers by providing leadership/soft skills and technical skills training necessary to take on supervisory roles;
  • Offer career-progression opportunities for potential women supervisors/ workers in textile and garment factories
  • Increase line-level productivity and reducing gender imbalances at management levels.

Workplace Cooperation

The overall aim of this Workplace Cooperation training is to equip enterprises with the tools needed to improve the business performance through better workplace cooperation and workplace practices. Specifically, after the participants have completed the training they will:

  • Recognize the goals of the Better Work Service Model and the Workplace Cooperation Committee function within the Model.
  • Be able to identify the role and responsibilities of management and worker representatives in the Workplace Cooperation Committee (WPC).
  • Be able to start engaging and working as WPC members in the most optimal way.
  • Be able to identify strategies in promoting an inclusive and representative WPC.

Workplace Communication for workers

This course helps workers understand the importance of workplace communication, identify barriers of workplace communication and find creative solution to improve workplace communication and have more knowledge of grievance procedures in the workplace

We provide a comprehensive assessment to determine each factory’s overall progress on meeting international core labour standards and national labour laws. Assessment findings are coupled with the factory’s own diagnosis of the condition inside the enterprise to provide a fair and well-rounded picture of success, demonstrated progress and areas for continued improvement.
