Discussion Paper 13: Analysing Better Work Data from a Gender Perspective

5 Dec 2013

A Preliminary Exploration of Worker Surveys with a Focus on Vietnam

This discussion paper, by authors Marzia Fontana (a Better Work Visiting Scholar in 2012) and Andrea Silberman, looks at baseline worker surveys for Vietnam from a gender perspective. Findings show marked differences between male and female workers, including:

♦ Significant occupational segmentation by gender.

♦ Women workers were less likely to be promoted or to receive training than men workers, despite the fact that women, on average, had been employed at the same factory longer.

♦ A larger number of men workers appeared to enjoy good health.

♦ Women workers reported having less free time than men workers.
