Garment enterprises are considered to have a medium level hazard potential. They are required to have an OSH Chemical Expert and/or OSH Chemical Officer as determined by the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration after an assessment of the quantity of chemical and hazardous substances that are being used and stored.
The OSH Chemical Expert/Officer is trained and appointed by the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration to perform his/her duties in an enterprise that have significant chemical use, for example garment enterprises that have a laundry or printing unit.
Chemicals and hazardous substances must be properly labelled and stored. Employers are required to keep an inventory of chemicals and hazardous substances and submit it to the Ministry. They also must keep Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals and hazardous substances in a location that is known and accessible to both workers and supervisors.
Employers must also train workers how to safely use, store and dispose of chemicals.
Employers must provide adequate washing facilities and cleansing materials, including shower and eye washing for workers in case of exposed to chemicals or hazardous substances.
