On 8 March Better Work will launch operations in Egypt, offering factory assessment, advisory and training services to improve working conditions and enhance responsible business practices in the country’s garment sector.
Better Work – a joint initiative of the ILO and the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group – is one component of a new ILO programme, strengthening labour relations and promoting inclusive social dialogue for development. This multi-year initiative will support Egyptian tripartite constituents to strengthen their institutions and implement the labour laws and practices that create an enabling environment for freedom of association and collective bargaining. Enterprises in the Textile and RMG sector will be supported to improve labour relations and compliance with national laws and international core labour standards and to realise the business benefits from these processes.
Better Work previously ran a limited pilot in Egypt between July 2017 and December 2018. The launch of a full programme in March 2020 will initially engage workers and employers in about 30 factories, with further expansion anticipated as progress is made in implementing the project objectives.
Regular updates on the progress on Better Work in Egypt will be provided.
