Maria has been managing the Better Work programme in Indonesia since February 2016. She has previously collaborated with Better Work on capacity building strategies and material development. Between 2012 and 2014, she managed a public private partnership project between the ILO and the chocolate industry on the elimination of Child Labour in the cocoa sector in West Africa. Prior to that, she coordinated the ILO’s Training Centre initiative on CSR which supported companies and private sector actors in understanding and implementing labour standards, at enterprise and global supply chain level. A lawyer by training, she started her career in the private sector working for lead multinationals dealing with CSR, compliance and legal risk assessment issues. She has also provided legal advice and representation on Public law as well as Corporate, Intellectual Property (IP) and Labour law. While working as a researcher for the European Commission, she was involved in the implementation of the European Strategy on CSR. She holds a Master’s degree (LL.M) on International Economic Law from the University of Warwick and a Law degree from the Portuguese Catholic University.
